As we remember the late Adedayo Isaac Omolafe (Expensive), we celebrate a life of service and pray that his enduring contributions to his people will continue to inspire generations yet unborn.
His story is therefore not merely that of a politician who occupied public offices; it is the story of a man who built relationships, touched lives and gave hope to many.
Late Hon. Adedayo Isaac Omolafe, fondly known as “Expensive,” was an illustrious son of Akure, Ondo State, a grassroots politician, community leader, philanthropist and distinguished legislator whose life was devoted to public service and the welfare of his people.
Born on April 18, 1964 in Akure, Adedayo Omolafe developed a strong passion for community development and service to humanity. His political journey was deeply rooted in grassroots engagement and a genuine connection with ordinary people.
He began his political career at the local level and served as a Councillor representing Ward 2 (Ijomu/Obanla), Akure Local Government, before subsequently serving in a supervisory capacity in Akure South Local Government. He later rose to become Executive Chairman of Akure South Local Government, a position in which he became widely recognised for his accessibility, grassroots mobilisation and commitment to the development of his people.
His political career continued to expand beyond the local government level. He served as the Ondo State Coordinator of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) under the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.
He was appointed by Dr Olusegun Mimiko as the Chairman, Ondo State Property Development Corporation (OSPDC) in 2015.
In the 2019 general elections, he was elected on the platform of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) to represent the Akure North/Akure South Federal Constituency in the Federal House of Representatives.
As a legislator, Omolafe was regarded as a strong voice for his constituency and maintained his characteristic closeness to the people. Beyond political office, however, it was his philanthropy and personal commitment to helping the less privileged that endeared him to many. Reports and tributes following his death highlighted his assistance to indigent students, scholarships and support for people irrespective of their political affiliations or social status.
He was particularly respected for his ability to relate with people across social and political divides. His supporters and acquaintances remembered him as a man who could connect with both the high and the lowly, and as a leader whose generosity and accessibility extended beyond party politics. His contribution to the political and social life of Akure earned him a reputation as a prominent grassroots leader and philanthropist.
On August 16, 2021, the news of his sudden death shocked Akure, Ondo State and the wider political community. He died at the age of 57, while still serving as a member of the House of Representatives. His sudden departure was widely described as a devastating loss, with tributes from political leaders, colleagues, friends, community members and ordinary citizens.
The late Hon. Adedayo Isaac Omolafe left behind a legacy defined by grassroots politics, generosity, accessibility, political courage and service to humanity. His passing created a vacuum in Akure’s political landscape, but the memories of his interventions in the lives of individuals and communities continue to endure.
