“The task of the leader is to get his people from where they are to where they have not been,” said Henry Kissinger. In just a short period, Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has shown that leadership is not about promises but performance, not about noise but results. The story of Ondo State today is one of steady transformation, deliberate reforms, and people-focused governance.
Governor Aiyedatiwa’s strides across critical sectors prove the truth of John Quincy Adams’ words: “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” From education and healthcare to infrastructure and security, his administration has laid enduring foundations for sustainable growth.
On security, his government has distributed utility vehicles to agencies in the second phase of intervention, provided additional funding for operations, and strengthened the fight against criminality. He once said, “A secure people are a progressive people,” and his actions align perfectly.
In the health sector, the commissioning of a modern Drug Warehouse in Akure and the rehabilitation of 50 primary healthcare facilities across the state have redefined accessibility to quality medical care. Similarly, the dredging of canals and clearing of waterways safeguard lives and livelihoods from flooding.
Education has received a historic boost under his watch. With N633 million released for WASSCE fees of 23,000 students, the employment of over 2,000 teachers, renovation of schools, and the launch of a 1:1 textbook-to-learner ratio, Aiyedatiwa has proved that “education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,” as Nelson Mandela declared.
The empowerment of people remains central to his agenda. From disbursing grants to 1,000 low-income women, to establishing a Youth Skills Development Centre in Akure where 500 youths are being trained on ICT, the governor demonstrates that true leadership creates opportunities, not excuses.
In infrastructure, Ondo is witnessing a renaissance: dualisation of Akure-Idanre, Akungba-Ikare, and Igbokoda-Okitipupa roads; commissioning of Oda dualisation project; ongoing works on the Judiciary Complex, Irese flyover, and Ijoka dualisation. Over 80 kilometers of completed roads spread across the senatorial districts attest to his vision of interconnectivity.
Economically, Ondo achieved the highest domestic debt reduction in Nigeria at 82.6 percent, signaling fiscal prudence and responsibility. Beyond that, the administration has engaged investors in agriculture and industry, acquired 10,000 hectares of farmland, and signed MoUs for petrochemical and fertilizer plants. With N3.5 billion approved as counterpart funding for RAAMP, rural roads will soon drive agribusiness growth.
Perhaps the most profound mark of his leadership is the consistency in paying workers’ salaries, pensions, and gratuities, affirming his human-centered philosophy of governance.
Governor Aiyedatiwa stands on the shoulders of giants, yet he carves his own path. His story is a living reminder of Plato’s timeless truth: “The measure of a man is what he does with power.” By turning power into service, resources into results, and promises into reality, Aiyedatiwa has inscribed his name in the book of purposeful leadership.
Ondo people can now see that governance is not about empty slogans but enduring footprints. As the governor presses forward with projects in roads, power, education, healthcare, agriculture, and youth development, he embodies the wisdom of Winston Churchill: “The price of greatness is responsibility.”
In Aiyedatiwa, Ondo has found not just a leader, but a servant with vision, courage, and a heart tuned to the people’s progress.
